inside an oregan mall.. it was a massacre. >> well trained police rushed to stop a deadly shooting rampage inside an oregon mall of. a neighborhood has been closed off in pittsburg by buchanan road and suzanne drive. less than an hour ago officers threw a flash grenade at the home tridelta transit. the bus line is rerouted from buchanan road due to police activity. there are a number of cars there. no word how it started or who officers are looking for. we'll update you as soon as we get some more information. a mall in oregon is closed after a mass shooting in the middle of the day yesterday. three people died including the

shooter. bigad shaban reveals from happy valley, oregon, where police reveal more about the gunman. >> reporter: authorities know who opened fire inside this shopping mall yesterday. authorities say 22-year-old jacob roberts has no criminal history but stole the rifle he used in the attack from someone he knew. >> i was helping a customer and then during the sale, there were five to seven gunshots, machine gunshot right outside my store. >> reporter: authorities released new details about the gunman. >> name jacob tyler roberts, born march 16, 1990. >> reporter: witnesses say he calmly announced, i am the shooter, before opening fire. >> there is no apparent relationship between the suspect and the victims. >> reporter: fright ebbed

shoppers quickly -- frightened shoppers quickly started heading for the exits. >> i bumped into several people. >> reporter: authorities say the shooter was firing near the food court until his rifle jammed. that's when he ran into this macy's. getting everyone out was a tough job. even the mall santa had to duck. >> it was a semi-automatic and i hit the floor. >> reporter: when it was all over, two people were killed. one young woman was wounded and the gunman took his own life. >> it's difficult to see how anything good can come out of a tragedy like this. in it reminds us how precious we are to one another. >> reporter: the mall will replain closed while investigators continue to gather evidence. >> reporter: shoppers and even the mall santa claus were forced to take cover.

>> bigad, we understand the police in the area were trained and apparently knew exactly what to do. is that true? >> reporter: yeah. the sheriff says as a result of past mass shootings elsewhere across the country, the responding officers that were here yesterday happened to have gone through a training course where they were able to break up into groups before heading inside to sort of assess the scene rather than having to wait for s.w.a.t. team members to head in. >> okay, bigad shaban live up in oregon, thank you. quick action by san francisco police officers likely saved the life of a minutes old baby this morning. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at san francisco general hospital. cate, this is a bizarre story. what happened? >> reporter: michelle, that baby boy is here at sf general in the neonatal unit expected to survive due to two police officers and a shelter worker who called 911. it was 2 a.m.

when a woman started pounding on the doors of the providence baptist church shelter. she was covered in blood and said she had a baby. a person opened the doors and told kcbs radio what he saw. >> i didn't even know she had a baby. so... that's why i was like, what's going on? i didn't -- at that time i was like trying to put all the pieces together. she was leaking blood so i'm like -- [ indiscernible ] , you know... i was scared for her. >> reporter: dorsey called 911. the woman left and came back with the baby in her arms. >> she was hysterical, saying she wanted to come in she wanted to come in at first. and then when she came back with the baby, she did not want to come in. >> reporter: then she took off again handing the newborn off to a man. we don't know if he was a stranger or someone she knew. but that man flagged down police officers. the officers quickly took the baby to sf general. one drove, the other performed cpr on the newborn. officers at the bayview police

station said their actions made them heroes helping to save the life. >> hopefully this is a good start for the baby at least the baby is alive and now it has a chance. >> reporter: the church administrator for the church, officers told him his shelter also played a crucial role in saving the baby. >> at that time of night being in the bayview, it's not a lot of things open and we have had the shelter here for 12 years and there wasn't even a guarantee that we were going to have a shelter. to have that happen makes all of it worth it. >> reporter: police tracked down the mother. she is here at the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. we heard reports she was uncooperative with police and that she could be facing child endangerment and abandonment charges. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. a 2-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after a suspected drunk driver crashed through the wall of her bedroom.

it happened in san jose around 3:30 this morning. the driver tried to drive away but was arrested nearby. the crib was broken in half, knocked to the floor. she was taken to the hospital but has no injuries. a change of appearance for the morgan hill man suspected of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar. antolin garcia-torres faced charges in three other kidnapping crimes and cbs 5 reporter anne makovec with the lamar supporters who wanted to see the suspect in court today. >> reporter: antolin garcia- torres was arraigned on additional charges today but so far has not entered a plea. >> yes, i do, your honor. >> reporter: those were some of the few words the defendant spoke today accused in the alleged murder kidnapping of missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar. he is also now charged with trying to kidnap three women in 2009 all from safeway park lots in the morgan hill area. a small team of sierra supporters came to the hearing this morning to see the suspect

face to face. >> you hear the chains like last time and it's come on, buddy, come out. stop being such a coward. >> reporter: 21-year-old garcia- torres looked different than the last time he was photographed. his hair is longer and his goatee trimmed. he was arrested on may 22 in connection with lamar's disappearance. she was last seen going to a bus stop on the morning of march 16th. prosecutors say garcia-torres killed her and hid her body but she still hasn't been found. search teams still scour the south bay for clues. >> every time, you know, it's like we want to find her but we don't want to find her? it's really hard but you kind of -- you don't get used to it, but you just kind of learn to plug along and just keep thinking of her. >> reporter: the next court date for garcia-torres is set for february 6. in san jose, anne makovec, cbs 5. four fire stations in contra costa county will shut down next month due to painful budget cuts. supervisors voted last night close the station this is walnut creek, martinez,

this morning. reid compared the back and forth between the gop leaders and the white house to the peanuts comic strike where charlie brown tries to kick the football that keeps getting yanked away. >> we are not going to fall for that again. the american people aren't going to be under the illusion that the republicans are sometime in the future going to come up with revenue. they are going to come up with raising the rates or, madam president, we are going over the cliff. >> well, if congress and the white house can't team up and reach a deal by new year's eve, automatic tax hikes and steep spending cuts will take effect which could send the united states back into recession. and clearly have a lot of work to do. a dungeness deal has bay area crabbers out on the water again. they went on strike after brokers tried pay them less than $3 a pound. the strike meant there was little fresh dungeness left in stores and restaurants. but dungeness should be back in stores and on menus tomorrow or friday at the very latest.

a lot of people happy about that. when it comes to great places to works the bay area has plenty to choose from. this year's glass door rankings for 10 bay area companies in the top 50 and facebook in first place followed by new coverer to the list riverbed technology, google 6th, chevron and linkedin at 13 and 14. east bay's workday ranks 19 with salesforce.com, agilent, intel and apple in the top 50. parents at walmart when maddie spotted a toy sewing machine. >> they got to for me. she had the bag in her hands. i'm like, what are you talking about? >> reporter: the girls' parents were randomly handed a bag by a man and woman and inside -- >> we both looked in the bag and we just went, wow. how did they know that she wanted that toy? >> it's the sewing machine that she wanted. >> reporter: the couple didn't give their names but employees spotted them hugging one another after their generous deeds. joyce short was working the cash register that day. she will never forget. >> and he said merry christmas to her. and she started crying immediately. and then i started crying. >> reporter: maddie's dad recalls another charming characteristic. >> their joy of giving to her. i will just never forget their laugh of joy. >> reporter: the couple spent thousands of dollars that day on merchandise. >> not wanting to be known, not wanting to be seen, they specifically made the comment there was no cameras, we're not here for recognition.

they didn't want to be named. >> reporter: as for maddie she has a little message for the secret santas who made the holiday special. >> they're nice, generous people and giving other people stuff they can't afford. >> aw, she's so cute, isn't she? >> juliette goodrich reporting by the way. >> yes. all right. shall we check in with lawrence? >> yes. >> you two went for a walk without me. is it night every nice out there? >> we do that every day. >> wonderful. a nice brisk walk outside. definitely the season as the cold air has moved in. high-def doppler radar still showing some scattered light showers around the bay area but the storm is now quickly winding down. still along the peninsula you can see some of those showers being picked up by our high-def doppler radar in toward half moon bay. palo alto just to the north there you have a cell that's moving along the 101 and also in toward the santa cruz

mountains but this is quickly winding down toward the afternoon settling down completely, just some partly cloudy skies. tonight it's going to be very cold. i think very few clouds. some chilly temperatures especially in the north and the east bays but more storms are beginningline up on the horizon. this afternoon, more clouds, beautiful cumulus puffs over the bay. and cool temperatures, only 55 degrees in san francisco. that cold front sliding through overnight dropping as much as a quarter to third of inch in wet parts of the bay area, most saw less. the cold air will stay in place. that means we are in for a chilly night tonight. the high sierra nevada still picking up some snow. up to 6" above 7,000 feet but the snow levels dropping down to 3,000 so if you are headed in that direction, pack the chains. as we look toward the rest of the afternoon, things clear out.

thursday a nice day although it will again be a cool and brisk day. and then friday, a storm system rolls off the coastline. it will bring with it more clouds and chance of showers out toward the immediate coast and that's about it. temperatures for highs today going to stay way down. 54 degrees in fremont. 54 in san mateo. east bay numbers only into the 50s. you notice the blue over the mountaintops. those are temperatures for highs only in the 40s. temperatures mainly into the 50s toward the next couple of days but how about this for overnight lows? down into the 30s, frosty start to the day tomorrow. wouldn't be surprised if we saw some of those temperatures dropping off into the 20s in some spots. otherwise, we are looking at some dry weather for the better part of thursday and friday. better chance of rain for everybody come sunday and monday. snow report: >> stay with us. we'll be right back. ,, ,,,,,,
